Game Worlds

“ACMI was delighted to collaborate with Sandpit once again for our Game Worlds exhibition, to bring the complexity of videogames to life in a way that feels true to fans as much as newcomers. This latest project builds on our long-term and trusted relationship with Sandpit, to deliver exceptional exhibitions in our space.”
– Seb Chan, Director/CEO of ACMI

Sandpit teamed up with long-time collaborator the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) to bring to life Game Worlds – an ambitious, hands-on celebration of gaming culture. Sandpit led the experience design for the entire exhibition, shaping ACMI’s vision of a truly interactive gaming showcase. Rather than simply informing visitors about games, Game Worlds invites them to dive in and play, with 44 of the featured experiences actively playable on-site and en masse.

A highlight of the exhibition is a custom-built tabletop interactive in the Dungeons & Dragons section, designed and built by Sandpit and powered by Unreal Engine. Elevating tabletop play from the dining table to the heart of the exhibition with incredible visuals and a unique and evolving storyline, this interactive is sure to delight anyone who’s ever rolled a 20 side die.

Spanning from the 1970s to today, the exhibition showcases many of the world’s most beloved games, including World of Warcraft, The Sims, Minecraft, Stardew Valley, and Neopets. Covering a wide range of genres and formats, it celebrates the one thing that unites all gamers: the joy of play.

The space is peppered with hidden easter eggs for curious visitors to discover, rewarding exploration and encouraging return visits. This is the first time Sandpit and ACMI have come together since ACMI’s ambitious $40 million redevelopment project, where Sandpit worked to re-imagine how visitors could engage with the landmark cultural institution.
