THE PROJECT.........................

Sandpit collaborated with Google Creative Lab for three unique experiments with Sounds in Space – a tool to create location-based binaural soundscape experiences. Sounds in Space creates an invisible audio layer over the real world, one that is revealed to the user as they walk through a physical space. The technology uses AR on mobile devices to place pre-recorded sounds in specific locations and then allows the user to navigate that environment, transforming what they hear in space. Sounds in Space was made in collaboration with – and for – artists, musicians, curators and choreographers of all kinds. Sandpit collaborated with a range of multidisciplinary artists and organisations to experiment with this technology:

Independent Artists 

Google Creative Lab and Sandpit brought together four independent artists – Mayu Muto, Thomas E Kelly, Glen Walton and Zoe Coombs-Marr – to explore how they might use this technology in their own unique artform practices.

State Library of Victoria

In collaboration with State Library Victoria, we experimented with a new kind of dynamic audio experience. By wandering throughout the gallery and choosing their own pathway, visitors could engage with a curatorial narrative that responded precisely to where they travelled, what order of objects they encountered and how long they engaged with each of the items.

Australian Chamber Orchestra

Invisible Orchestra was a dynamic sound installation in which audiences navigated their way through an abstract space inspired by the solar system. With their vision partly obscured, audiences viscerally experienced the attracting and repelling forces of space through beautiful and original soundscapes composed by the ACO’s renowned artistic director Richard Tognetti, and composer Joseph Nizeti
