Australian Dance Theatre
The Beginning of Nature
In Virtual Reality
THE BRIEF..........................
To create an immersive virtual reality experience putting users amongst Australian Dance Theatre dancers in dramatic, natural environments.

THE PROJECT.........................
Sandpit collaborated with internationally acclaimed contemporary dance company, Australian Dance Theatre on the world premiere of The Beginning of Nature. Renowned Artistic Director Garry Stewart took inspiration for the work from the rhythms that constitute the very fabric of nature and life itself.
To accompany The Beginning of Nature, ADT and Sandpit created a virtual reality experience using Google Cardboard and a smartphone app. Each audience member was given custom designed viewers which used their smartphone as a screen, allowing them to view a 360 degree video of the dancers of ADT performing choreography from The Beginning of Nature. The videos were filmed in natural locations around Adelaide, Australia by collaborators Jumpgate. Users can also share the 360 videos via Facebook from within the app.

We gave out free Google Cardboard viewers to festival-goers at the 2016 WOMADelaide festival to coincide with ADT’s debut performance of The Beginning of Nature.
The original score by composer Brendan Woithe features the Kaurna language, the local language of the first peoples of the Adelaide plains. ADT acknowledges that this is the cultural property of the Kaurna people, and thanks its custodians for collaborating with the company in developing the score.
THE TECHNOLOGY..........................
iOS app, Android app, Unity Games Engine, VR, Facebook Video
